“Punk is musical freedom. It’s saying, doing and playing what you want. In Webster’s terms, ‘nirvana’ means freedom from pain, suffering and the external world, and that’s pretty close to my definition of Punk Rock”.—Kurt Cobain

Lez Zeppelin and Nirvanish @ UCPAC – Saturday, May 20th 2017

It will be a loud night of splintering electric guitars, plus hundreds of voices from the audience singing along to their favorite hits, at the Union County Performing Arts Center on May 20.

Two adrenaline-inducing tribute bands representing rock legends take the stage at 8 PM: Lez Zeppelin, an all female tribute to the hard rock ’70s band Led Zeppelin, and Nirvanish, a tribute to the grunge, early ’90s band Nirvana. From fans that have been fans since Led Zeppelin was founded to those born right after Nirvana’s prime (who grew up listening to their parent’s records), this concert will provide as faithful an experience to the real deal as anyone could find.

Lez Zeppelin, founded in 2004, began to grow in acclaim after being the subject of a 2005 article in SPIN magazine, and subsequently the subject of countless other publications and spots ranging from a front page feature on CNN.com to a nation-wide feature on CBS Good Morning. The band was, and still is, praised for their contributions in a social setting where all-female rock tribute bands were beginning to surface and playing just as hard, fast and mean as their original counterparts. Their self-titled first album was released in 2007 (produced by one of Led Zeppelin‘s actual recording engineers, Eddie Kramer), and in 2008, Lez Zeppelin headlined opening night of Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival. Lez Zeppelin’s second album, Lez Zeppelin I, was released in 2010. The band took great pains to record this album with the same vintage equipment Led Zeppelin used on their first self-titled album in 1969, including a Fuzzbender stomp box, a ’50s era Telecaster and Les Paul, a ’60s era compressor, etc. Their dedication to the fidelity of their recorded music compared to Led Zeppelin‘s is a testament to the experience of their live shows.  continue reading…

Lita Ford, Lez Zeppelin and the “Lemon Song”…

Legendary rock guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Lita Ford has teamed up with tribute band Lez Zeppelin on an all-new cover of Led Zeppelin classic, “The Lemon Song.” The song, premiering exclusively on Parade.com, will be released January 20 on She Rocks, Vol. 1, a compilation album featuring 11 iconic female guitarists produced by famed guitarist Steve Vai’s Favored Nations label.

“Led Zeppelin are the godfathers of rock ‘n’ roll. They created a new sound that took music to a whole new level,” says Ford. “I knew every Zep lick on guitar. At the time, they were the ultimate guitar band and to revisit this song now has been absolutely amazing.”

Of their collaboration with Ford, Lez Zeppelin says, “We’re thrilled to finally have a chance to record ‘The Lemon’ for such a unique collection and to get ‘down on this killing floor’ with the great Lita Ford!”

A Grammy-nominated singer/guitarist who rocked alongside Joan Jett in The Runaways, Ford will be honored at the She Rocks Awards’ fifth annual show on January 20. The She Rocks Awards are hosted by the Women’s International Music Network to pay tribute to stand-out women in the music industry. You can catch the live-streamed show at Parade.com/SheRocks.

“Fly Dance Company Day” – September 30th

proclamation_fly_dance_company

Here it is in the Mayor’s own words:

On September 30, 2016, FLY Dance Company will celebrate its twenty-first year history of performing and community outreach with a dance concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre, its favorite theatre in the whole world.

Every so often a company bursts onto the dance scene with such original talent and drive that a whole new genre is born. Such it was with FLY Dance Company when its creator Kathy Wood conceived, named, and began performing her “theatrical hip hop” dance style in Houston.

FLY quickly went from an unknown dance company to a popular new group wowing audiences in Houston, in Texas, nationally, and internationally—touring an average of 25 weeks and 60 concerts yearly in venues including Washington’s Kennedy Center, New York’s Lincoln Center, Vail International Dance Festival, Jacobs Pillow, and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts while performing an average of 100 youth outreach shows in Houston and throughout the USA.

FLY is especially proud of its work through community partnerships to present educational shows, lectures, workshops, and classes for at-risk youth in Houston’s inner city and surrounding areas. FLY has worked with detention centers, public schools, private schools, and community centers to spread positive messages for goal-setting, working hard, being respectful, staying in school, rejecting drugs, and generally staying on the right track. Because FLY’s dancers are “very cool” to youthful audiences, these messages have a lasting impact.

FLY expresses its gratitude to board members for their guidance and to donors and organizations including the Houston Endowment Inc., Houston Arts Alliance, Americas Promise’s Mars Millennium Project, Texas Commission on the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts for their financial support. Without these people and organizations, FLY Dance Company might never have existed or succeeded.

Booked by the largest talent agency in North America, FLY will be traveling far and wide performing dance concerts, educational shows, and dance workshops. FLY operates under the partnership of dancers Jorge Casco, Chris Cortez, Don Lee Rivera, and Adam Quiroz with Kathy Wood as Artistic Director and is proudly carrying on its tradition as “FLY Dance Company, the Gentlemen of Hip Hop.”

The City of Houston commends FLY Dance Company for its accomplishments in the arts and its community service.

Therefore, I, Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim September 30, 2016, as
FLY Dance Company Day!!
