Lez Zeppelin and Nirvanish @ UCPAC – Saturday, May 20th 2017

It will be a loud night of splintering electric guitars, plus hundreds of voices from the audience singing along to their favorite hits, at the Union County Performing Arts Center on May 20.

Two adrenaline-inducing tribute bands representing rock legends take the stage at 8 PM: Lez Zeppelin, an all female tribute to the hard rock ’70s band Led Zeppelin, and Nirvanish, a tribute to the grunge, early ’90s band Nirvana. From fans that have been fans since Led Zeppelin was founded to those born right after Nirvana’s prime (who grew up listening to their parent’s records), this concert will provide as faithful an experience to the real deal as anyone could find.

Lez Zeppelin, founded in 2004, began to grow in acclaim after being the subject of a 2005 article in SPIN magazine, and subsequently the subject of countless other publications and spots ranging from a front page feature on CNN.com to a nation-wide feature on CBS Good Morning. The band was, and still is, praised for their contributions in a social setting where all-female rock tribute bands were beginning to surface and playing just as hard, fast and mean as their original counterparts. Their self-titled first album was released in 2007 (produced by one of Led Zeppelin‘s actual recording engineers, Eddie Kramer), and in 2008, Lez Zeppelin headlined opening night of Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival. Lez Zeppelin’s second album, Lez Zeppelin I, was released in 2010. The band took great pains to record this album with the same vintage equipment Led Zeppelin used on their first self-titled album in 1969, including a Fuzzbender stomp box, a ’50s era Telecaster and Les Paul, a ’60s era compressor, etc. Their dedication to the fidelity of their recorded music compared to Led Zeppelin‘s is a testament to the experience of their live shows.  continue reading…

From The Beatles to Bollywood: the Redlands Bowl brings an eclectic mix to audiences in 2017

EDLANDS >> From The Beatles to Bollywood and everything between, the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival lineup for 2017 has something for everyone.

“We’re trying to make sure we hit everyone’s hot spot,” said Jan Hudson, president of Redlands Bowl Performing Arts. “But on the flip side of that we want to expose young people to different eras of the arts.”

According to Hudson, the festival looks to achieve several goals each year, but organizers work especially hard to introduce audiences to the music of today and yesterday. Read more…

Excellent Peace Frog Review

Written by Caroline McElroy
There was a time when being in a tribute band in L.A. was frowned upon. But over the years that opinion has changed and Peace Frog is in part responsible for the elevation of tribute acts in the L.A. music scene. Peace Frog IS the ultimate Doors’ tribute band and has been sending chills down the spines of their concert goers for over 20 years.

Fronted by Tony Fernandez, Peace Frog was conceived in Venice Beach in 1998 and has played to sold-out concerts around the world.

The Doors were also established in Venice Beach and, if you listen to the banter of Fernandez as The Doors’ Jim Morrison, they began at an earlier incarnation of the Venice Beach Bar. Fernandez allows that this is where the guys would gather and consume LSD and croissants in the early days of 1965.

Man do I remember those days. Wild, strange days of LSD indulgence and dancing barefoot until my feet would bleed…yes, those were the salad days of The Doors.

Very recently it was proclaimed The Doors Day as it was the 50th anniversary of the birth of The Doors in Venice Beach.

As for the live performance of Peace Frog, it was as if Morrison himself was performing in front of my totally enraptured eyes. The Doors were one of the few local acts that I saw around town on numerous occasions and know well the mannerisms and banter of Morrison as well as the note to each Doors’ song. Peace Frog brought back memories that had long been buried in the abyss of my mind.

Resurrecting memories long forgotten is what a good tribute band should do for its audience as well as evoke the sounds of an era that rang true to the the adage “Freak Freely”…Peace Frog is that kind of tribute band.

During their heyday in L.A. as rising stars, I saw The Doors at the Whiskey a Go Go, Hollywood Bowl, The Hullabaloo and The Theater in The Round in Woodland Hills. It was at The Theater in The Round that my first love and I got so hot listening to the music of The Doors that we hurriedly left the gig to get into his panel truck…Come On Baby Light My Fire.

More than that memory is the admiration of Morrison’s mannerisms as well as his well documented banter.

Lita Ford, Lez Zeppelin and the “Lemon Song”…

Legendary rock guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Lita Ford has teamed up with tribute band Lez Zeppelin on an all-new cover of Led Zeppelin classic, “The Lemon Song.” The song, premiering exclusively on Parade.com, will be released January 20 on She Rocks, Vol. 1, a compilation album featuring 11 iconic female guitarists produced by famed guitarist Steve Vai’s Favored Nations label.

“Led Zeppelin are the godfathers of rock ‘n’ roll. They created a new sound that took music to a whole new level,” says Ford. “I knew every Zep lick on guitar. At the time, they were the ultimate guitar band and to revisit this song now has been absolutely amazing.”

Of their collaboration with Ford, Lez Zeppelin says, “We’re thrilled to finally have a chance to record ‘The Lemon’ for such a unique collection and to get ‘down on this killing floor’ with the great Lita Ford!”

A Grammy-nominated singer/guitarist who rocked alongside Joan Jett in The Runaways, Ford will be honored at the She Rocks Awards’ fifth annual show on January 20. The She Rocks Awards are hosted by the Women’s International Music Network to pay tribute to stand-out women in the music industry. You can catch the live-streamed show at Parade.com/SheRocks.

The song remains the same: Female rock group performs depth of Led Zeppelin’s music

Steph Paynes is on a mission to show the world that the future of guitar-playing is in women’s hands.

As guitarist and band leader for the all-girls rock group Lez Zeppelin, Paynes has chosen what she considers the most beautiful but complicated rock repertoire — the work of the revered rock group Led Zeppelin — to prove it.

She and three other female rock musicians will make this statement in Redwood City this week, performing Led Zeppelin’s songs at Club Fox Thursday, Jan. 5
